Blind Box: Gudetama Cafe

Hello! Today I’m happy to share my  unboxing of the Gudetama Cafe blind boxes. These blind boxes are made by Rement, and are a little different than some of the other blind boxes out there. Unlike the Funko blind boxes, these are more of a set of items. Depending on the line it could be food, household items, school supplies, etc. The Gudetama Cafe ones are all food related, which I’m surer you figured out from the name.

DSC00556

I really enjoyed doing this video and plan on doing more in the future. I like that these are sets of things as oppose to just a figure, because I feel like I can use these to take some cute pictures with my Figmas and Sailor Moon figures. Don’t worry I’m still a fan of the Funko blind boxes, mainly the horror ones, and The Walking Dead line; and I plan on doing unboxing videos of those in the future.

Do you like blind boxes? Which are some of your favorites?

Butterbeer and Fantastic Tales: The Wicked + The Divine

Hello and welcome back. A few weeks back I tweeted about wanting to get into comics and began to start looking into which ones to read. Over and over The Wicked + The Divine by Image Comics kept popping up, and with good reason. If you recall from my last post I mentioned that I begun to read The Wicked + The Divine. The comic began in June of 2014, and is published monthly, so I didn’t feel like I was too far behind.

Let me try to get into why without giving too much away. The comic revolves around the fact that every 90 years twelve mythical figures are reincarnated as young adults with godlike powers, minus the immortality that is. For 2 years they get to live like gods and then they die, so goes the story. We then meet a regular British gal named Laura that gets caught up with the current 12 Pantheon. While first drawn to this lifestyle, she soon starts to realize things aren’t all she expected it to be.

Why I like it, and you will to:

Well besides the main plot of mortal gods that have 2 years to live it up, there’s representation. I’m not just talking about diversity as far as races, but sexuality, and even when it comes to the gods (they don’t just stick to Greek or Roman, there’s also Norse, Celtic, and many more). Honestly this was one of the big things that really drew me in. I love representation and this comic is chock full of it. It’s refreshing to see people from all walks of life in a role of power. I also like that the characters morality vary also from good, to wicked and everything in between.

Of course there’s more to it but I don’t want to give away too much. I myself have only gotten up to book 5, but I can tell you they have a loyal reader already. I can’t wait to buy the other issues and catch up with the story. Oh and did I mention there’s talks of adapting it into a TV series? If this pans up I’m all for it!

So now we get to the fun part. Since I’m hooked on this comic I want to share my love of it with you. I’m giving you the opportunity to win your very own copy of  Vol 1 which is issues 1-5 of The Wicked + The Divine. All you have to do is follow the instructions on how to enter. Contest runs until September 24, 2015 (which just so happens to be my kid’s birthday).

Good Luck!!!

Butterbeer and Fantastic Tales: The Devil in the White City

Hello cupcakes. Today I bring to you my review for Erik Larson and Tony Goldwyn’s The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair Changed That America. I had been wanting to read this book for the past year or so. I hard so many great reviews and well it has a serial killer so you know I was all about it. The book revolves around the Daniel H. Burnham, the architect for Chicago’s 1893 World Fair, and H. H. Holmes, a serial killer disguised as a doctor who took advantage of the huge amounts of people flocking to the city.

As I mentioned before I’m all about serial killers and had heard about Holmes and his Murder Castle before so I was excited to dive into this. However once I started reading it my enthusiasm died down. While I knew the book wouldn’t be entirely about Holmes I found it dragged on when it came to the parts dealing with the construction of the fair. At times I found I had to force myself to keep reading just to make progress. It wasn’t like this the whole time, but yeah you may loose interest here and there (or not, my attention span is short). While I enjoyed reading about the fair and the challenges faced by the creators I wish there had been more on Holmes. With that being said the writers did get into some of his murders and how he ultimately got caught. I’m amazed with the scams and lies Holmes pulled off, along with the killings of course but can see how it happened. The writers paint a good picture of life surrounding the fair.

Overall I can say I was a bit disappointed but it wasn’t a total let down. If you’re looking to give it a read go for it, but be warned there might be parts that are drawn out. I give it a 3 out of 5 stars.
What kind of books do you like to read? Any recommendations?

Hello cupcakes…:

Wow it’s been a long time!! Life has been busy busy. As you can see or maybe you can’t (I’ve been having issues with my redirect), my blog and URL name have changed from GeekyGlamFit to XoMermaidKisses. I’ve also switched over my IG and Twitter handles to the same. Why? Well because I kinda wanted a fresh start and honestly I just fell in love with the name. With that being said I should be updating on a more regular basis, I hope. In the meantime I’m just going to post some of my currents.
Reading: Radical Self Love: A Guide to Loving Yourself and Living Your Dream by Gala Darling. I’ve been following Gala’s blog for years now and simply love her. This book is just full of love and positivity. A nice little pick me up and reminder to stay focus. If you want to get your hands on it I suggest you do so quick. If I’m not mistaken this week is the last week it’s going to be sold.
Watching: Well I’ve been watching so many things! So here’s the thing for some reason I’m going through some phase where I start shows and stop halfway and move on to another. Not cause I don’t like them, honesty I don’t know why. So here’s the list of shows I’m watching now.

Oranges is the New Black: I know, I know how can I have not finished it the first weekend it was out?!

Daredevil: I love it, just have to get around to finishing.

Sense 8: This is sorta sci fi I guess. It’s 8 individuals that are somehow linked telepathically. They’re from all parts of the world and all walks of life. It’s pretty interesting and I’m really enjoying it. I do warn you there’s a bit of sexual content which doesn’t bother me, but people tend to mention that a lot when talking about this show.

Between: I only started watching this a few days ago and so far have only seen 3 episodes. Again a sci fi kinda vibe to it. Basically with out going into details is people start dropping dead, no idea why, town is quarantined, and I haven’t gotten too far. Won’t get into too many details but it’s made more interesting by the population that is being affected but this phenomenon.

Doing: What have I not been doing? Oh so much. Attempting to enjoy summer. Spending time with the family, and my adorable little niece who is now 1 month!! Oh and I started Vlogging! Yay! I have 3 videos so far with a new one hopefully coming up this weekend. I’ll also be attending the Latina beauty expo this upcoming weekend so if you’re there and see me say hi. Please comment, share, and subscribe.

I’ve been using the Sony A5000 as my vlogging camera and let me tell you I’m so happy with it. I do have a Canon DSLR but when I don’t feel like carrying that the Sony is perfect. I know there’s a newer model but honestly I’m more than pleased with this one. It has a pop up screen that makes it so convenient. If you’re looking for an everyday carry camera to vlog I suggest you check this one out.

Playing: I’m still hooked on Animal Crossing New Leaf and trying to make my town oh so pretty. If you play send me your friend code so we can visit each other. I also picked up a PS4 along with the new Batman game but have yet to play. The Mr has started and says he really likes it so far. I’ve watched some gameplay and I have to say it looks really good.

Randoms: I’ve been back to doing my makeup more often. I have picked up some products I’m so happy with. I’m not sure yet if I’ll do a post about them, a video, or maybe both. If there’s any products you want to recommend, feel free to put it in the comments. Also I’m always looking for book recommendations, even though I’m so behind on my to read list. Shoot them my way.
What are you into currently? Have any fun plans coming up? I love hearing all the cool things everyone is up to.

Oh hi

Hello dolls. I know I know I’ve gone and disappeared again. While I’ve tried to stay on top of blogging and reading blogs I have failed miserably. School takes up so much time. But I didn’t want to make a quick update of some of the current things going on in my life.

Watching: Daredevil, I’m sure most of the world is also watching this. It’s SO good. And while I would usually binge watch I’ve actually paced myself with this series. Also it’s just been renewed for another season so yay!!

I’ve also been watching Bloodline, which is a Netflix original series. I’ve only watched 3 episodes and I’m still not sure how I feel about it. I like it but there’s something that is just not letting me love it. We’ll see how that goes.

Reading: The Haunted, it’s a book based on one of Ed & Lorraine Warren’s cases. Ed and Lorraine are the demonologist who have investigated several hauntings including the Annabelle case which has been made into a movie.

I’m also reading The Devil in the White City, which is about a serial killer in Chicago. It revolves around a huge World’s Fair that is being built there.

Mood: Tired, so very tired. And a bit bummed due to some news I received to day, but I’m choosing to not focus on that.

Health: Well I’m living! I signed up today for a “Biggest Loser” challenge at work. Everyone who signs up pays $20 and at the end of 3 months the person who looses the most weight gets the pot. I figured even if I don’t win its a way to help motivate me. Now I need to find time to get back in the gym.

Listening: I listen to a lot of Slate podcasts, but also The Indoor Kids, The Nerdist, The Read, Stuff You Should Know, Bizzare States, and This American Life to name a few. Oh and Fake Goth Girls by Liz and Mia. They’ve made two episodes so far and they’re great.

Obsessed With: My hair, well wanting to dye it again. I just don’t know what. I’ve done red for so many years, and while I switched to this blondish brown two months back and I like it I would like something new. Skincare, I’m on the search for a new routine/products. What I’ve been doing no long works.

Thinking of: So many things!!! Awaiting the arrival of my niece in about a month. So excited for that. Wanting to get into vlogging and podcasting myself. Tips are welcomed.

Working on: Besides school stuff I have been working on launching a Geek Girls Brunch chapter here in Jersey. I found a lovely co-officer and we’ve been trying to recruit gals for our first event. Ideally we would like to be up and running by the end of summer. So if you’re a geek gal in NJ or know of one send her our way.

I’m also looking to have someone make me a logo. I may attempt to make one on my own bit doubt I’ll be able to sit and do so until after the semester is done.
So those are some of the things surrender occupying my time. Kids, work and school take up most of it, but I try to keep up and do other things when possible.

What are some of your currents? As always recommendations are always welcomed.

5 Fandom Friday: Songs That Changed My Life

5-fandom-friday-338x250

Hello and welcome to another 5 Fandom Friday, super late edition. Once again I want to thank Megan from The Nerdie Girlie and Kristin from Super Space Chick for coming up with this awesome linkup. I’ve missed out on a few but just had to write up my piece for this past week’s theme, songs that changed my life. I’ve enjoyed reading everyone’s post and have found new music to add to my iPod.

1. Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata

This is one of the first songs that really hit me in the feels. I remember years ago when I was a young girl listening to it and thinking it was the most beautiful thing I have heard. I still feel the same way. It instilled in me a love for classical music and years later it would be a big influence of my love affair with playing the cello.

2. Foo Fighters: Everlong

Where do I start??? Foo Fighters are one of my all time favorite bands ever, ever, ever. And it all started when I first heard Everlong. Growing up I listened to mostly hip hop and RnB (besides my love for classical music), and it wasn’t until I got older and met people from outside my group that I was exposed to other types of music. I have to thank my friend Jen for introducing to the greatness which is Dave Grohl. One day I plan on getting something Everlong related tattooed on me.

3. Nas: The Message

As I mentioned growing up I was big into hip hop, it played a major part in my teenage years. Biggie, KrS-One, Redman, Tupac all took turns in my yellow Sony walkman or boombox. This was back when the only way to access new music was to buy mixtapes by people like DJ Clue, Who Kid, Kay Slay, and Green Lantern to name a few. However Nas just won me over from day one. The Message was one of the first songs of his I ever heard and it was love at first listen. The beat and his flow sealed it for me. **Warning this song contains explicit language.**

4. Aventura: Romeo y Julieta

Like most people my age the first Aventura song I heard was Obession, however it wasn’t until I heard Romeo y Julieta that I went ga ga for them and have been hooked ever since. The words pulled me in and that’s all she wrote. Not only did it make me a fan of Aventura, but of Bachata in general.

5. Eagles: Hotel California

I know I said Beethoven was my first love but if  I’m being honest it was probably the Eagles since I’m sure I’ve been hearing this song since I was born. After all Hotel California was released almost a decade before I was born, and as far back as I can remember my mom would jam out to it in the house. What’s not to love about this song, great lyrics, awesome guitar riff and it reminds me of home. Whenever i’m missing California this is one of my go to songs.

Extra:

Michael Jackson and Jay Z: You Rocked My World Remix

Can I just tell you first off like most 80s babies MJ was a huge part of my musical life (yes I am aware I’m dating myself here). When I heard about Michael and Jay Z performing together at Summer Jam I was in disbelief and so disappointed I did not witness this first hand. Luckily the single was released soon after.

Fleetwood Mac: Dreams

Oh Stevie Nicks how I love you so. Picking one Fleetwood Mac song was a tough one but Dreams I think was the right one. And you just know I was all for it when American Horror Story Coven included the fabulous Ms. Nicks in their series.

As always I have enjoyed writing up this post. While it was difficult narrowing it down to 5 songs once I really began thinking about it I knew exactly which ones I wanted to go with. Till next time.

Review: Lime Crime Velveteen Red Velvet

Hello cupcakes.
Brr the weather this weekend has been slushy, cold and yucky. On top of that everyone in my house was sick. Oh fun times. Today was the first day all week I was able to do anything, so when my girlfriend asked to meet for lunch I was all for it.

I threw on an outfit and did my makeup. I kept my eyes pretty soft so decided to do a bold red lip. Of course I reached for one of my favorites, Lime Crime’s Velveteen lipstick in Red Velvet. Let me just tell you it’s been love at first sight since the first time I tried it.

IMG_0700.JPG

IMG_0701.JPG

I never thought I would be able to pull off a red lipstick until I found this one. I think a big reason I love it is because it goes on wet but dries to a matte. I’m all about matte lipsticks lately. I can’t say it’s completely stain proof, some will come off here and there but not like regular lipstick. I’ve eaten complete meals with drinks and dessert and not had to touch up my lips. That’s a plus in my books. Sometimes if I don’t want such a bold red I take a dark burgundy lip pencil and fill in my lips with it a bit mixing the colors before it dries. By far this is one of my favorite purchases and I’m going to be buying more from the line.

IMG_0697.JPG

IMG_0695.JPG

As you can see it is bright red but still kinda of flat I guess is the way I would describe it. The perfect pop for those special days out. Hope you all are keeping warm. Till next time.

What’s your go to lip color? Do you prefer lipstick or lipgloss?

Review: The Killing

Hello cupcakes. In my last post I mentioned I stumbled across a tv series called The Killing and was really enjoying it. Well I’m done watching the series and decided to do a review.

IMG_0602.PNG

The Killing originally aired on AMC in April of 2011 (how I didn’t know about it till now is beyond me), and is based off the Danish tv show Forbrydelsen. It’s based in Seattle, Washington and follows homicide detectives Sarah Linden (Mireille Enos) and Stephen Holder (Joel Kinnaman). They may not always be on the same page, but the dynamics really works.

IMG_0604.JPG

One of the things I like most about this show is that it keeps you guessing. The twists and turns work, they’re not just thrown in to be there. Every time the Mr and me thought we knew who was behind something we would be proven wrong. Again these plot twists aren’t just thrown in there to throw you off guard, things line up and lead up to certain things for a reason.

IMG_0603.JPG

For whatever reason AMC canceled this show not once but twice. Netflix went and picked it up late 2013 and released the fourth and final season in August of 2014. I’ll admit that out of all the season the fourth isn’t my favorite, but it isn’t bad either. I just wish it were different. I was pleased with the ending though, it satisfied all my needs. Overall I definitely recommend you give this series a go whenever you have time. You can catch all four seasons on Netflix. If you do let me know what you think.

What are some of the shows you’re watching now?

Currently…

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted what some of my currents are. So I thought why not?

IMG_0661.JPG

Reading: Gone Girl, yes I’m a bit late. I wanted to read the book before I watched the movie but it worked out the other way around. I enjoyed the movie and am also enjoying the book.

Watching: The Killing on Netflix. This was originally aired on AMC, yet somehow I missed it. It was canceled but thankfully Netflix picked it up. It’s about two detectives trying to solve a homicide with loads of twists and turns along the way.

Gym: Been working on my cardio. I hate cardio, I rather lift but it has to get done. I think part of the reason why I hate it is because I suck at it. I’ve had issues with my knees that interfere with running and other activities. I’m working on building up my stamina & endurance.

Family: Squish is 10 months old and I’m still adjusting. He’s currently teething again and there have been many sleepless nights in our home.
The oldest joined the robotics team after I “encouraged” him to and loves it!! I’m volunteering on the team and am excited to see what they come up with. The current project has to do with recycling.

Music: Currently I’m loving “Riptide” by Vance Joy. It just puts me in a good mood.

Purchased: Well it’s not technically a purchase, it’s a replacement. My headphones broke but luckily I had protection plan on them and today I received my brand new pair of headphones.

IMG_0660.JPG

Projects: Focusing on this blog and getting back to posting. Also been toying around with the idea of making some vlogs. I did a few years back and am always asked why I stopped. It’s a time issue and time continues to be an issue but I may aim for biweekly maybe. Any suggestions, topics are welcomed.

There’s my currents, what are some of yours? I love hearing what other people are into.

Till next time my lovelies.

5 Fandom Friday: Characters I Would Like to Dress Up As for Halloween

Hello again and welcome to my late link up post for 5 Fandom Friday. This week ill share with you characters I would like to fess up as for Halloween. As always this was a fun prompt and had me thinking about so many ideas. It was hard to narrow it down but here it goes.

IMG_0186.JPG
Jean Grey: I have always loved Jean Grey since the first Saturday morning I saw her on TV while watching the Xmen animated series.

IMG_0185.JPG
Lulu Final Fantasy X: While I myself don’t play the Final Fantasy games my brother is a huge fan and I would watch him play. When I saw Lulu I thought she would be great to dress up as. Her outfit has such character and loads of detail.

IMG_0187.JPG
Bulma: Dragon Ball Z is another favorite series of mine. Dressing up as Bulma could be cute and fun.

IMG_0188.JPG
Tank Girl: I’ve always loved seeing people dress up as Tank Girl. She’s so outrageous and over the top. Another fun character to do.

IMG_0184.JPG
Gambit:I guess you can see a trend here. Doing a female version of Gambit is in my to do list.

With so many great characters to choose from it’s hard to make a choice. If only Halloween were everyday. What would you like to dress up as?
