As I sit here looking at the calendar I’m saddened to see that we’re almost done with summer. Living in New Jersey means I experience all the seasons. While I enjoy most of them, except winter (it gets no love from me), summer by far is my favorite. The sun is out longer, you don’t need a coat, and there’s no snow or slush to drive through. Best of all I can be outdoors, which means I can go to the beach!
A few weeks ago I did my 6 on 6 post with a beach theme. I thought it would be nice to share a few more pictured from my trip to Spring Lake. Spring Lake is my favorite beach here in Jersey. There’s no games and shops on the boardwalk, which means no hustle and bustle. It’s perfect to just relax and take in the beauty that is mother nature. If you’re ever in the are and looking for a place to get away and unwind I recommend Spring Lake. You can’t bring coolers on the beach, but everyone just leaves them on the boardwalk and walk to and from to get their snacks and drinks. It isn’t a far walk so it really is no big deal, and you don’t have to worry about anyone taking your stuff. If surfing or boogie boarding is your thing (it’s my family’s fave activity), you can partake in them here.
Perfect skies, perfect water, makes for a perfect day.
The Mermaid in me simply loves the ocean.
The boys are Mermen, they love the beach too!
If you haven’t been to the shore yet this summer Squish says go before it’s too late!
Soon we won’t be able to go and play on the beach. Winter will be here and the cold will set in. In the meantime we plan on going a few more times before summer is over.
Hello cupcakes. Today I bring to you my review for Erik Larson and Tony Goldwyn’s The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair Changed That America. I had been wanting to read this book for the past year or so. I hard so many great reviews and well it has a serial killer so you know I was all about it. The book revolves around the Daniel H. Burnham, the architect for Chicago’s 1893 World Fair, and H. H. Holmes, a serial killer disguised as a doctor who took advantage of the huge amounts of people flocking to the city.
As I mentioned before I’m all about serial killers and had heard about Holmes and his Murder Castle before so I was excited to dive into this. However once I started reading it my enthusiasm died down. While I knew the book wouldn’t be entirely about Holmes I found it dragged on when it came to the parts dealing with the construction of the fair. At times I found I had to force myself to keep reading just to make progress. It wasn’t like this the whole time, but yeah you may loose interest here and there (or not, my attention span is short). While I enjoyed reading about the fair and the challenges faced by the creators I wish there had been more on Holmes. With that being said the writers did get into some of his murders and how he ultimately got caught. I’m amazed with the scams and lies Holmes pulled off, along with the killings of course but can see how it happened. The writers paint a good picture of life surrounding the fair.
Overall I can say I was a bit disappointed but it wasn’t a total let down. If you’re looking to give it a read go for it, but be warned there might be parts that are drawn out. I give it a 3 out of 5 stars. What kind of books do you like to read? Any recommendations?
Today I headed to North Jersey with my friend Katy for the Latina Media: Beauty, Hair and Health Expo. This was the first year for the expo and overall ok. The location was great, right off the main highway, and plenty of parking. Milani cosmetics was there and I enjoyed their exhibit. So many beautiful matte lip colors (which I’m all about right now), but I’ll get into matte lipsticks in a different blog. One thing is for sure the panel I attended was amazing.
The panel was about real Latina beauty and included Massiel “Mankofit” Arias, and Dascha Polanco (Dayanara from OITNB), among others. Even if you’re not a Latina this panel was just full of positivity and self love. I encourage everyone to watch at least of it. I made a video which is kinda long, but worth watching. Of course I couldn’t record the whole panel or my video would be over a hour long.
All the ladies looked amazing and were just so real and positive. I left there feeling so inspired. I know I’ll be attending next year’s expo and expect it will be bigger and better.
As of right now I don’t have any conventions set except for NYCC in October. If you know of anything coming up in the NJ/NY area let me know. I’m into loads if different things and attend all types of different conventions/expos. What did you do this weekend? What’s your favorite convention to attend?
Till next time loves. As always comments are welcomed. Xoxo
Wow it’s been a long time!! Life has been busy busy. As you can see or maybe you can’t (I’ve been having issues with my redirect), my blog and URL name have changed from GeekyGlamFit to XoMermaidKisses. I’ve also switched over my IG and Twitter handles to the same. Why? Well because I kinda wanted a fresh start and honestly I just fell in love with the name. With that being said I should be updating on a more regular basis, I hope. In the meantime I’m just going to post some of my currents. Reading: Radical Self Love: A Guide to Loving Yourself and Living Your Dream by Gala Darling. I’ve been following Gala’s blog for years now and simply love her. This book is just full of love and positivity. A nice little pick me up and reminder to stay focus. If you want to get your hands on it I suggest you do so quick. If I’m not mistaken this week is the last week it’s going to be sold. Watching: Well I’ve been watching so many things! So here’s the thing for some reason I’m going through some phase where I start shows and stop halfway and move on to another. Not cause I don’t like them, honesty I don’t know why. So here’s the list of shows I’m watching now.
Oranges is the New Black: I know, I know how can I have not finished it the first weekend it was out?!
Daredevil: I love it, just have to get around to finishing.
Sense 8: This is sorta sci fi I guess. It’s 8 individuals that are somehow linked telepathically. They’re from all parts of the world and all walks of life. It’s pretty interesting and I’m really enjoying it. I do warn you there’s a bit of sexual content which doesn’t bother me, but people tend to mention that a lot when talking about this show.
Between: I only started watching this a few days ago and so far have only seen 3 episodes. Again a sci fi kinda vibe to it. Basically with out going into details is people start dropping dead, no idea why, town is quarantined, and I haven’t gotten too far. Won’t get into too many details but it’s made more interesting by the population that is being affected but this phenomenon.
Doing: What have I not been doing? Oh so much. Attempting to enjoy summer. Spending time with the family, and my adorable little niece who is now 1 month!! Oh and I started Vlogging! Yay! I have 3 videos so far with a new one hopefully coming up this weekend. I’ll also be attending the Latina beauty expo this upcoming weekend so if you’re there and see me say hi. Please comment, share, and subscribe.
I’ve been using the Sony A5000 as my vlogging camera and let me tell you I’m so happy with it. I do have a Canon DSLR but when I don’t feel like carrying that the Sony is perfect. I know there’s a newer model but honestly I’m more than pleased with this one. It has a pop up screen that makes it so convenient. If you’re looking for an everyday carry camera to vlog I suggest you check this one out.
Playing: I’m still hooked on Animal Crossing New Leaf and trying to make my town oh so pretty. If you play send me your friend code so we can visit each other. I also picked up a PS4 along with the new Batman game but have yet to play. The Mr has started and says he really likes it so far. I’ve watched some gameplay and I have to say it looks really good.
Randoms: I’ve been back to doing my makeup more often. I have picked up some products I’m so happy with. I’m not sure yet if I’ll do a post about them, a video, or maybe both. If there’s any products you want to recommend, feel free to put it in the comments. Also I’m always looking for book recommendations, even though I’m so behind on my to read list. Shoot them my way. What are you into currently? Have any fun plans coming up? I love hearing all the cool things everyone is up to.
Thanks for stopping by.
