Rediscovering My Hobby

A lot of people may know that I love photography. Taking pictures, looking at pictures others have taken, it all makes me so happy. A little over a year ago I invested in a nicer camera, and had all the intentions of getting to know it in and out. Well things happened and I had to put all that on hold. During my break I picked up my camera again, and the spark was ignitated again. I was out and about clicking away, I even met up with a friend for a mini sneaker shoot. It’s been so much fun taking pictures and editing. With school back in session and it getting dark earlier it’s going to be tricky heading out to shoot, but I’m going to try and do so every other week.

Here’s some of my pictures from the summer. I posted some of these on IG @Xo_MermaidKisses and I made a separate IG account just for my pictures for me to see and keep track. Sort of as a learning tool to see progress. You’re more than welcome to give it a look and follow if you want: @DVA.Frames.

On the Big Screen~ Captain America: Civil War

Hello lovelies. I finally made it to the theater this past weekend and got to watch Captain America: Civil War. First off when ever I do my reviews I try not to go too deep into thing, and post spoilers. With that being said it does make it hard to do reviews while trying not to giveaway too much.

Okay so here we go. The acting as always was spot on. I think for the most part we can all agree that acting isn’t a major concern when it comes to these movies. I loved the introduction of Black Panther, played by Chadwick Boseman, and am very happy with the the way he executed his part. Another character I was pleasantly surprised with was Spider-Man, played by Tom Holland. Look I’ll be honest I’m kinda over Spider-Man with all the movies and reboots, but this take on him was refreshing and spot on. In other words it’s the Spider-Man I always wanted. That’s just me, I’m sure not everyone feels the same way. Kudos to the writers for getting it right.
Story, overall I had a general idea of what to expect going in and was happy with the writing. I wasn’t sure exactly how it was going to be executed, but I think they did a good job with it. The only thing that wasn’t 100% for me was the villain. Like oaky I get why he did what he did, but something about him as the villain just didn’t make me believe it all the way. Not horrible, but I feel like maybe there could’ve been more, or maybe a different villain. Eh let’s move on from that because I’m clearly having a difficult time trying to translate how I feel.

Now on to action. Well I think we all know how that goes. It was full of cool fighting scenes, and explosions of course. I have to say that they didn’t go overboard or add things just to have action going on in the movie. The sequences came together and were well executed. I think fans will walk out happy with the scenes, and all the heroes kicking butt.

Overall I would give the movie a 4 out of 5. It was a great movie, with just the right amount of action. I would definitely go see it again. Now bring on Black Panther!!
Did you watch Civil War? What are your thoughts?

Butterbeer and Fantastic Tales~ In the Country We Love: My Family Divided

Hello and welcome to Butterbeer and Fantastic Tales, where I review my latest readings. Today I’ll be reviewing Diane Guerrero’s memoir, “In the Country We Love: My Family Divided.”

Most people may recognize Diane from Orange is the New Black, or Jane the Virgin however, while this is a memoir it does not focus on Diane’s journey to become an actress (there are parts here and there that touch on her pursing acting and how that was her escape). Instead it is about how at the age of 14 her life was turned upside down when her family was deported to Colombia while Diane was left behind.

Let me just start by saying that the minute I heard about this book I knew I just had to read it. With that being said since it came out while school was in session I went back and forth between reading, and the audio version read by Diane. If you can listen to the audio version I really recommend you do. Diane brings her family and story to life with her reading. Also I like to point out that while this book also has slang and textspeak throughout, it isn’t annoying and does not take away from the story. I personally like it, and it shows her personality.

I’ll tell you right now there were parts of this book that pulled at my heart strings and made it ache a bit. Listening to what happened to her family, and being that I have known people who have gone through similar things hit home. While I am myself a first born here in the US, I did not have to fear that my parents would be deported due to my mom being Puerto Rican, and my dad who is Mexican becoming a US citizen. However my neighbors, some friends, and accuaitances lived this and some are still living this fear everyday. I could not imagine what it would be like to come home at 14 from school and to find out that your parents had been picked up by ICE to be deported. But wait it gets worse, these government officials who took Diane’s parents away then left and did not worry or think about the daughter they were leaving behind. In fact no government agency was there to take care of, or look after the well being of Diane who might I add is a US citizen. How screwed up is that? You come and snatch this kid’s parents up, but nothing was put in place to alert this kid, to take care of her, to ensure her mental health and well being? Yet these things happen every day. Parents leave to work and do not come back home to their kids.

I praise Diane for  sharing her story and using her platform to bring this reality into media. While this is Diane’s story, and her voice, this is also the story of so many more people. So many people are unaware, or just don’t care about these fellow human beings, these families, lives that are shattered. Diane’s story will at the very least encourage discussions to be had.

Being that I loved this book so much I have decided to give one of you a copy of your own. Yup that’s right, I want to send a copy of this book to one of you lovely people. To enter just follow the instructions below. Good luck and happy reading!!

Blind Box: Gudetama Cafe

Hello! Today I’m happy to share my  unboxing of the Gudetama Cafe blind boxes. These blind boxes are made by Rement, and are a little different than some of the other blind boxes out there. Unlike the Funko blind boxes, these are more of a set of items. Depending on the line it could be food, household items, school supplies, etc. The Gudetama Cafe ones are all food related, which I’m surer you figured out from the name.

I really enjoyed doing this video and plan on doing more in the future. I like that these are sets of things as oppose to just a figure, because I feel like I can use these to take some cute pictures with my Figmas and Sailor Moon figures. Don’t worry I’m still a fan of the Funko blind boxes, mainly the horror ones, and The Walking Dead line; and I plan on doing unboxing videos of those in the future.

Do you like blind boxes? Which are some of your favorites?

What’s in My Schoolbag

Hello cupcakes. I’ve always been fascinated by what’s in my bag videos. It’s fun to see what other people carry, and if any of them have some of the dame things I do. So I decided to do a what’s in my schoolbag video since it is back to school times. I hope everyone enjoys it, and if you would like to see a regular what’s in my bag video let me know and I’ll be happy to do so. As always feedback and suggestions are welcome.

5 Fandom Friday: Things I Love About Fall

It’s been awhile since I’ve done a 5 Fandom Friday so I’m excited to join back in. As most people know Summer is my jam, so it’s hard for me to let go and embrace fall. However once I come to terms with it I do enjoy it.

1. Football

As far back as I can remember I loved football, more importantly the Dallas Cowboys. My love of it came from spending hours on Sundays watching it with my stepfather. As a kid I would try to mimick the hand gestures the referees made when making calls, as an adult I still do the same thing. My love for the Cowboys however is my own since my stepfather is not a fan. I couldn’t tell you what made me pick them as a kid since I had no clue about stats and so, but I’ve loved them since. If you follow me on Twitter you may have already seen some of my football tweets, if not be prepared because they’re coming.

2. New York Comic Con

I have been attending NYCC with my hubby and kids the past four years and we love it. This year however tickets were especially hard to get (if any of you here tried I’m sure you know the struggle was real). We still need one more ticket for my hubby and are hoping to get lucky.  We won’t be taking Squish yet because I just feel like he’s too small, but I can’t wait until we can. Most years one of my kids makes his own cosplay and this year is no different. If you’re attending and see me there feel free to say hi!

3. The Walking Dead

I’ve been a fan since the first episode and miss this show so much while it’s off. I mark my calendar and even set a countdown. As much as I love The Walking Dead I have yet to go to a panel and honestly I may never because the line and wait for it is insane.

4. The colors

A picture is worth a thousand words and I guess I really don’t have to get into it much. The turning of leaves is just beautiful.

5. Halloween

I love desssing up, the hayrides, carving pumpkins, and all the horror movies. Oh and the candy of course.

While nothing beats summer, fall comes close. What are some of your fall favorites?

Butterbeer and Fantastic Tales: The Wicked + The Divine

Hello and welcome back. A few weeks back I tweeted about wanting to get into comics and began to start looking into which ones to read. Over and over The Wicked + The Divine by Image Comics kept popping up, and with good reason. If you recall from my last post I mentioned that I begun to read The Wicked + The Divine. The comic began in June of 2014, and is published monthly, so I didn’t feel like I was too far behind.

Let me try to get into why without giving too much away. The comic revolves around the fact that every 90 years twelve mythical figures are reincarnated as young adults with godlike powers, minus the immortality that is. For 2 years they get to live like gods and then they die, so goes the story. We then meet a regular British gal named Laura that gets caught up with the current 12 Pantheon. While first drawn to this lifestyle, she soon starts to realize things aren’t all she expected it to be.

Why I like it, and you will to:

Well besides the main plot of mortal gods that have 2 years to live it up, there’s representation. I’m not just talking about diversity as far as races, but sexuality, and even when it comes to the gods (they don’t just stick to Greek or Roman, there’s also Norse, Celtic, and many more). Honestly this was one of the big things that really drew me in. I love representation and this comic is chock full of it. It’s refreshing to see people from all walks of life in a role of power. I also like that the characters morality vary also from good, to wicked and everything in between.

Of course there’s more to it but I don’t want to give away too much. I myself have only gotten up to book 5, but I can tell you they have a loyal reader already. I can’t wait to buy the other issues and catch up with the story. Oh and did I mention there’s talks of adapting it into a TV series? If this pans up I’m all for it!

So now we get to the fun part. Since I’m hooked on this comic I want to share my love of it with you. I’m giving you the opportunity to win your very own copy of  Vol 1 which is issues 1-5 of The Wicked + The Divine. All you have to do is follow the instructions on how to enter. Contest runs until September 24, 2015 (which just so happens to be my kid’s birthday).

Good Luck!!!

Summer How I Love You

As I sit here looking at the calendar I’m saddened to see that we’re almost done with summer. Living in New Jersey means I experience all the seasons. While I enjoy most of them, except winter (it gets no love from me), summer by far is my favorite. The sun is out longer, you don’t need a coat, and there’s no snow or slush to drive through. Best of all I can be outdoors, which means I can go to the beach!

A few weeks ago I did my 6 on 6 post with a beach theme. I thought it would be nice to share a few more pictured from my trip to Spring Lake. Spring Lake is my favorite beach here in Jersey. There’s no games and shops on the boardwalk, which means no hustle and bustle. It’s perfect to just relax and take in the beauty that is mother nature. If you’re ever in the are and looking for a place to get away and unwind I recommend Spring Lake. You can’t bring coolers on the beach, but everyone just leaves them on the boardwalk and walk to and from to get their snacks and drinks. It isn’t a far walk so it really is no big deal, and you don’t have to worry about anyone taking your stuff. If surfing or boogie boarding is your thing (it’s my family’s fave activity), you can partake in them here.

Perfect skies, perfect water, makes for a perfect day.

The Mermaid in me simply loves the ocean.

The boys are Mermen, they love the beach too!

If you haven’t been to the shore yet this summer Squish says go before it’s too late!

Soon we won’t be able to go and play on the beach. Winter will be here and the cold will set in. In the meantime we plan on going a few more times before summer is over.

What’s your favorite thing to do in summer?

6 on 6: Blue ~ Down The Shore Edition

Hello fabulous folks. So a fellow geek gal Emma over at The Scruffy Little Nerd Herder  came up with a fantastic idea called 6 on 6, check out her post and read all about it. Basically the 6th day of each month we’re to put together 6 photos involving the color for that month. For example August was blue, hence the title and my pictures will have some sort of blue in it. Ideally I would be posting on the 6th and would like to have it be geek related. However work has been bananas so I decided to make his month all about one of my greatest loves, the beach. I love going down the shore (in Jersey it’s always going down the shore even if you’re driving North), and all things nautical, after all I am a Mermaid.

Here are a few pictures from our trip this past Sunday to my favorite beach Spring Lake.

 Relaxing, enjoying the beautiful day.

My beach umbrella happen to be blue, perfect for the challenge.

Unfortunately since these were all taken on my phone I couldn’t zoom in but that kite was so pretty, and the color of the sky was perfect.
After all long but fun day the me. Of my life packing up to head home.

Okay so this is 7 pictures instead of 6, but narrowing it down was so hard. Hope everyone enjoyed this post. It was fun and I look forward to doing again next month. If you want to join in on the fun feel free to do so and let me know so I can read your post.
