Let’s Get Back to The Grind…

Hey cupcakes.

It’s been too long, but I won’t apologize. I had to take some time off and just enjoy life. Don’t get me wrong, I missed blogging, and you guys; but after the semester I had I decided to enjoy the summer with my family. Guess what, it was the right thing to do. I don’t believe that blogging should be forced, it should be something that makes you happy (mostly, there are some headaches attached), and content should come naturally. I wasn’t in a space where I could really give it my all, because my mind just wasn’t there. That’s not to say I didn’t think about my blog, or posts; I did and came up with loads of great ideas. I took tons of pictures to go along with the posts too. Now it’s just a matter of editing and posting. I also have video to edit for my YouTube channel, and am thinking of revamping things over there, so be on the lookout for that.

I know being consistent is key when it comes to the “blogging world”, and I really want to be as consistent as possible; however life for me isn’t so consistent. Work is not a regular 9-5, I have school, kids, and other life events. I can’t promise I’ll be here 2x a week, or that I won’t take a break again. What I can promise is to be honest, and try to provide you with some great content, and maybe a laugh or two. With I that being said I’ll be around more, but some rings will be changing here also. I want to share a bit more of my life with everyone, so I’ll be doing some “life updates” from time to time, along with other things I’ll start incorporating.

Thank you to those who have stuck around. I appreciate you all, and can’t wait to start posting more. I’m also slowl trying to catch up on blogs and videos (I’ve been slacking hard!).  In the meantime I’m off to enjoy some of the warm summer weather before the cold rolls around.

How was your summer? Did you do you take any special trips, or do anything special?
XOXO,

Desiree

Summer 2016

July Currently…

So it’s been awhile, I don’t know what to say other than I have just been out of it a bit. I have so many ideas, and have taken so many pictures/videos but just haven’t been able to really sit down and do much. However I do want to share some of my currents, so here we go.

Doing:

So I’ve been busy being out and about with the family since it’s summer and we’re trying to soak up all the sun we can. I made it to the beach, but it was late so I couldn’t go swimming. I hope that will change soon. I have also been busy finally trying to launch our chapter of Geek Girl Brunch. This is super exciting since I’ve been trying for awhile now, and have just not been able to for various reasons.

TV:

I’m working through a few shows including OITNB, Preacher, Fear of the Walking Dead, Psych (rewatching), and Mr. Robot just to name a few.

Gaming:

I have been playing more games, which is making me happy and have even began streaming on Twitch. Feel free to check me out if you’d like, drop by and say hi if you see me around: Mermaid Kisses on Twitch. I only have one video up due to the fact that I didn’t realize I hadn’t selected the option to archive my streams. I’ll have another post going into more detail on the games I’ve been playing.

Reading:

I’m so behind on reading, I have two books to finish and review. I should have those up by the end of the month, early August.

General:

Overall I’m just kinda out of sorts and I don’t really know why. It’s weird. I have no motivation, but I have been keeping up with walking/jogging on my days off, and other self care things. I see myself slipping into depression again a bit, but the usual stuff that helps isn’t really cutting it. I do have some time off scheduled in the next few weeks and I’m hoping this will help.

Some good news, me and the familia were able to secure our tickets for NYCC. It was so stressful, and at first I thought we would be out a ticket. Thankfully for online friends, someone helped me out and we were able to secure the last ticket we needed (max # of tickets you can buy is 4, and my family is 5). So I’m excited to have that out the way, and know we’re in.
So that’s it in a nutshell. I hope to get back into the swing of things, and finally get around to posting both here and on my YouTube channel, along with more streams on Twitch.

What are some of your currents?

Just wanted to share this because after this past week’s madness I think we all need some good vibes. Take care of yourselves, and be safe.

Vans x Nintendo

Hello loves. Earlier this month Vans released their line in collaboration with Nintendo. Being an 80s baby I fell instantly in love with the old school Nintendo themes. My kiddos also picked a pair each. The lovely weather this past weekend was perfect to head outdoors and get some pics.

3 out of the 4 (1 of my guys is missing here) decided to go with the NES controller style. We picked up the Mario and Luigi pair for Squish.

How cute are the hi tops for toddlers!

I’m really digging the hi tops version. Seeing them on my oldest son’s feet makes me want to go out and get a pair of my own.

I like that “Game Over” was added to the bottoms of the sneakers.

I didn’t get a chance to  take photos of the Zelda slip ons I picked up, but check back later in the week and I’ll have a post about them. I have to admit that these are my favorite collaboration that Vans has done so far. They’re so fun and nostalgic. Check out the rest of the line including Princess Peach and Donkey Kong
Did you pick up anything from the release? Which ones are your favorite?

Butterbeer and Fantastic Tales~ In the Country We Love: My Family Divided

Hello and welcome to Butterbeer and Fantastic Tales, where I review my latest readings. Today I’ll be reviewing Diane Guerrero’s memoir, “In the Country We Love: My Family Divided.”

Most people may recognize Diane from Orange is the New Black, or Jane the Virgin however, while this is a memoir it does not focus on Diane’s journey to become an actress (there are parts here and there that touch on her pursing acting and how that was her escape). Instead it is about how at the age of 14 her life was turned upside down when her family was deported to Colombia while Diane was left behind.

Let me just start by saying that the minute I heard about this book I knew I just had to read it. With that being said since it came out while school was in session I went back and forth between reading, and the audio version read by Diane. If you can listen to the audio version I really recommend you do. Diane brings her family and story to life with her reading. Also I like to point out that while this book also has slang and textspeak throughout, it isn’t annoying and does not take away from the story. I personally like it, and it shows her personality.

I’ll tell you right now there were parts of this book that pulled at my heart strings and made it ache a bit. Listening to what happened to her family, and being that I have known people who have gone through similar things hit home. While I am myself a first born here in the US, I did not have to fear that my parents would be deported due to my mom being Puerto Rican, and my dad who is Mexican becoming a US citizen. However my neighbors, some friends, and accuaitances lived this and some are still living this fear everyday. I could not imagine what it would be like to come home at 14 from school and to find out that your parents had been picked up by ICE to be deported. But wait it gets worse, these government officials who took Diane’s parents away then left and did not worry or think about the daughter they were leaving behind. In fact no government agency was there to take care of, or look after the well being of Diane who might I add is a US citizen. How screwed up is that? You come and snatch this kid’s parents up, but nothing was put in place to alert this kid, to take care of her, to ensure her mental health and well being? Yet these things happen every day. Parents leave to work and do not come back home to their kids.

I praise Diane for  sharing her story and using her platform to bring this reality into media. While this is Diane’s story, and her voice, this is also the story of so many more people. So many people are unaware, or just don’t care about these fellow human beings, these families, lives that are shattered. Diane’s story will at the very least encourage discussions to be had.

Being that I loved this book so much I have decided to give one of you a copy of your own. Yup that’s right, I want to send a copy of this book to one of you lovely people. To enter just follow the instructions below. Good luck and happy reading!!

Sparkly Vibes

flowers_rug

Hello cupcakes. So as mentioned I begun my nursing program in January, and well it has done a number to me. The stress from school, and constantly feeling overwhelmed with the amount of work that had to get done, coupled along with just everyday life/family factors had me so exhausted in every way possible at times. Halfway through the semester I decided I wanted to do something to help keep me in good spirits, and just remind me that all is not bad (some days this was harder than others). That’s when I decided I wanted to do some kind of gratitude writing. So every week I made it a point to write a “I’m thankful for” entry in my Day One journal. Basically I made a list of things I was grateful for, or things that made me happy. From trivial things like I drank my favorite tea, to more profound things. And guess what, it helped!! Reflecting on good things that are going on in my life helped me get through some of the tougher, “I give up” times.

So I have decided to bring that here to my blog, and am calling it Sparkly Vibes. Once a month I’ll make a quick list of all the things that give me sparkly vibes. I think it’s a great way to just stop and appreciate some of the things that may go unnoticed when we’re facing our day to day stressors.

Sparkly Vibes:

  • My children: We celebrated a few birthdays recently, and while it always makes my heart ache a bit seeing them grow so fast, it’s also such an amazing thing to witness.
  • My classmates: Guys I have made such great connections with some of my classmates. I don’t know what I would’ve done without them. Our study sessions, and just texts keeping each other motivated helped me through so many bumps.
  • Spring!!!! Flowers, the smell of rain, warmer weather, everything!!
  • Floral prints: I’ve been digging all the beautiful floral prints I’ve been seeing everywhere. So many beautiful colors and patterns.
  • Strong badass women: I’ve been coming across so many strong, beautiful, kick ass ladies both in media and IRL. Everywhere from Beyonce’s Lemonade video (or is it a movie? Either way it’s SO good), to women I have encountered in life. So much uplifting and positivity. I love it!!
  • Banana cupcakes: I had the most moist, fluffy, delicious banana cupcakes. There are no words to explain the yumminess I experienced.
  • Snapchat: I haven’t added many people, and those I have added either know how nuts I am already, or don’t know me and so I don’t care if they judge me. I feel like Snapchat is my outlet to be silly, to dance, vent, and all the other things I feel like doing, and I don’t worry about who’s seeing it. It’s not like FB where all my friends and family are, or IG where I’m just trying to share things that make me happy, or when I think I look cute. It’s just there for me to say and do what I want without overthinking.
  • Hamilton: I don’t think I have to go into the millions of reasons why.

While I posted this in the beginning of May, I think from here out I will be posting this towards the end of each month. That way I can kinda recap all the good things from the month. So look for my next Sparkly Vibes post towards the end of June.

What are your Sparkly Vibes of the day? Want to do a link up and share our vibes together, just let me know. What are some of the things that help you get through some of the tougher times in life? Share all your feel goods, I love to hear about what makes others happy.

Since I’ve Been Gone

Hello cupcakes. Well as you can see my plan of updating once week was a major fail. I’ve managed to post only 1 new video on my You Tube channel which I forgot to mention here, doh!! No worries I’ll post it down below.

So here’s the deal, I love to blog and make videos. It’s an outlet I quite enjoy, but with school it’s just super hard to keep up with. I feel guilty for not being to put out new content, and for not being able to keep up with ohter’s blogs and YT channels. It’s not from lack of trying, every morning I wake up and try to get to at least 3-4 videos or blogs before getting out of bed. However I’m missing out on so much still. This has lead me to start thinking of ways to keep content rolling out while I’m at school, and how I can keep up with other’s things. I enjoy reading about books and movies people liked (or didn’t), I love seeing everyone at Cons, and the latest collectible added to a collection. So I’ve began brainstorming, and mapping things out. I’m hoping to have a better system once my semester starts again in August. In the meantime thank you to those who have stuck it out with me, and check in on my blog/YT channel even though it’s drier than the Sahara right now. I’m almost done this semester, and after May 10th (okay maybe May 11th, I’ll need a day to recuperate after my final),  I’ll be free to make updates and create videos.

Mod Cloth Haul

Also I got the above photo from Helene over on Helene In Between, her site is full of all sorts of blogging tips.

Any and all types to stay organized and on top of making content is welcome and appreciated. How do you organize yourself? How do you just keep up with things in general? I feel like I’m behind on life, not just this blog.

NYCC 2015

Hello. It’s been awhile and I’ve been meaning to post, but life has been busy. This semester is really keeping me busy, good thing there’s only 6 weeks left. I wanted to share some pictures and video from our trip to New York Comic Con. Me and my family have been going for about the past 4 years and we really look forward to it.

This year however even though we enjoyed ourselves there were a couple of negatives. One of the biggest let downs was the lack of panels. I thought I was the only one that thought the panels were lacking, but after discussions with others this was one of the main complaints across the board. The other part was how crowded it was. Don’t get me wrong I expect a crowd but this year it was massive. Also it seemed people were a little less friendly this year. Not everyone of course, but more than usual. I’m also disappointed I didn’t get to meet as many of you fabulous people as I wanted to. Time was limited and the crowd made it hard to get around.

We still had a good time and my little guy left on cloud nine after receiving so many compliments on his cheeseburger back pack. He was Steven Universe and had a blast taking pictures with people. Here are a few pictures from the day and a video. E

Anyone else go to NYCC? What were your highlights? Did you encounter any problems? What con will you be attending next?

What’s in My Schoolbag

Hello cupcakes. I’ve always been fascinated by what’s in my bag videos. It’s fun to see what other people carry, and if any of them have some of the dame things I do. So I decided to do a what’s in my schoolbag video since it is back to school times. I hope everyone enjoys it, and if you would like to see a regular what’s in my bag video let me know and I’ll be happy to do so. As always feedback and suggestions are welcome.

6 On 6: Septemeber

Hello and welcome back to another 6 on 6 post. If you aren’t familiar with 6 on 6 feel free to read about it here. This link up is bought to you by Emma, so be sure to check her site out. This month’s color is purple.

Here are my 6 purple picks for this month:

I’m kind of a makeup junkie and am always trying new things. Lately I’ve been all about matte lipsticks, however when I saw this Melted Metal lipstick by Too Faced  in Metallic Jelly I just had to have it. The color is perfect for fall and I love the metallic looking flecks in it.

Some of you that follow me on Twitter Instagram may already know I’m into Animal Crossing. I love everything about it, but I especially love constantly changing my character up. It’s hard to see here but my person is sporting some lavender pigtails.

I love notebooks, journals, all types of writing products. However when it comes to school  I prefer these smaller sized notebooks by Five Star. As I was back to school shopping I came across this cute floral one I had to have. I’m currently using it for both my Chemistry and ASL class but am thinking of buying another and using one for each class.

A few weeks back I decided I wanted to get into some comics. I started to ask for recommendations and read reviews, across the board The Wicked + The Divine by Image Comics came up over and over. It’s about a group of teenagers that have been transformed into Gods, however they are not immortals. I don’t want to get too into here because I have a post all about it coming up this week where I’ll be giving away Vol 1 to one lucky person. Be sure to check back for my review and to enter the giveaway.

Okay so technically my niece isn’t purple, but how could I pass up the opportunity to show her off in this cute purple outfit?Being that I have all boys having a niece is an excuse for me to buy all of the cute girl outfits and hair bows. My kids adore their cousin and I’m sure you’ll be see plenty of all them in upcoming posts.

So while I didn’t take this picture I couldn’t  have a post about purple things without mentioning one of my favorite podcast Welcome to Night Vale. This podcast is about a made up dessert town called Night Vale. It’s posted twice a month and talks about life in Night Vale. Listen along as Ceceil reports all the going ons, like mayor elections, what the Glow Cloud and it’s kid have been up to, the Faceless Old Woman who secretly lives in your home, and the weather. I was hooked from the first time I listened and am excited for the book to come out in October.

These are my 6 on 6 pictures let me know if you participated, I would love to see everyone else’s posts.

What are some of your favorite purple things?

Till next time

How I Won Fast with Fast Play

Hello loves.

Anyone who knows me or follows me knows from time to time I like to partake in the NJ Lottery. It’s so fun to me and I always envision all the fun things I can do if I won some extra cash. So when Blog Meets Brand reached out to me and said they would  give me $15 to try out NJ Lottery’s new play and win game Fast Play game I was all about it.

Fast Play is NJ Lottery’s new instant win game that can be purchased at the lotto terminal, however unlike drawing games you don’t wait for results, you know instantly. There’s no scratching required either like other instant games. You ask for one of the many different games they have such as Bling Bling Bucks ($5 each) or Red Hot Numbers ($1 each) and the ticket is printed for you.

Off I went to my favorite Quick Chek to purchase my tickets. You however can go to any store that sells NJ Lotto tickets such as 7-11 or your neighborhood bodega. If the store has a lottery then you can play there.

My Quick Chek had this Fast Play display which made buying tickets even easier! All I did was look at the different games available and pull the little slip for the ones I wanted. With new games coming out in the new few months these may change or others added to this list.

As you see each game has it’s own little ticket. I then went up to the lotto terminal and handed these slips over to the attendant who then ran them through the machine. How easy is that? No numbers to tell her, no fumbling with names.

Just like that I had my tickets and was ready to see if I won. Depending on the game you choose the tickets are printed differently and instructions on how to win are printed clearly on them. However finding out if you won is easy too. If you’re not sure if your ticket is a winner most lotto terminals have a little green scanner where you can check your tickets at.

Woo! One of my tickets won $7!! I thought it was a winner but wasn’t sure. When I scanned it that’s the message I got. This is so convenient for me since I can be a bit on the shy side sometimes (yes I have a hard time speaking to people at times, can you believe it?), with this I know for sure I won without having to ask anyone.

I then just gave my winning ticket to the attendant and received my cash. All in all it took about 5 minutes for me to purchase and check my tickets. It doesn’t get any easier and faster than that.

Overall I had fun playing the Fast Play games. They’re different from the games I’m used to playing, but different is good. Bling Bling Bucks is my favorite right now, but I’m excited to see what new games are introduced in the future.

Do you like playing any lottery games? If so what’s the most you’ve won. If you play the Fast Play games let me know how your experience went and how much you won. Good luck everyone!
