5 Fandom Friday: Favorite Podcasts

Hello lovelies and welcome to another 5 Fandom Friday. It’s been awhile since I’ve done a 5FF, but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to share some of my favorite podcasts. as always thanks to the fabulous gals Megan over at The Nerdy Girlie and Kristi at Super Space Chick for coming up with 5FF and the prompts. Here are my picks in no particular order.

1. The Read

The Read is a weekly podcast hosted by Kid Fury and Crissle that covers hip hop and pop culture, along with bringing awareness to issues faced by POC, and some current events. At the end of each episode the host go on to “Read” someone, or an event that has pissed them off. I honestly laugh from beginning to end, or shout out an Amen here and there,  and find myself nodding in agreement when they tackle some of the current events. I’ll warn everyone that it’s NSFW since there’s cursing involved. You don’t have to be heavy into hip hop to enjoy the show, they cover pop culture in general; and Kid Fury is one of us with his love of games and all things geek.

2. The Friend Zone

Join Assante, Fran, and Dustin every Wednesday as they discuss mental hygiene and ways to try to live a happier better life. Why I love it? POC discussing mental health needs and overall well being. In general mental heal needs is an area I’m always pushing for discussion in since I work in the field, and the importance of POC to speak on these issues is so needed. But don’t get it twisted this isn’t just some boring podcasts addressing medical terminology and such. Fran is chock full of awesome holistic approaches for all sorts of well being. They’re funny, they’re genuine, and you can tell they really are friends and want to make a difference in people’s life. This one may also be NSFW due to swearing.

3. Fake Goth Girls

I briefly mentioned Fake Goth Girls last week in one of my post, so of course I had to include them. Join Liz and Mia every week as they discuss women issues, geek culture, and adulting. They’re super cute, funny, and always entertaining. They’re best friends, and that works so well with the way they interact on the show. I’m always learning about some cool new game, or podcast, and other awesome geeks in the world through their show.

4. Criminal

Criminal isn’t just about crimes, it’s about people who have either done something wrong, have had something wrong done to them, are in involved in the justice system in some way, or just so happen to be caught up in some wrong doing. They discuss not just current crimes, but incidents that have happened in the past too. I love hearing when they interview some of the people involved and hearing the backstories.

5. Slate Money

Okay guys I’ll admit in terms of money I don’t have much, but I’m still super interested in economy and growing ones personal wealth. Slate Money features Felix Salmon of Fusion, Cathy O’Neil of MathBabe.org, and Jordan Weissman of Slate. The trio have good chemistry, and have a way of talking about money, and issues involving money in a way I get. If you would’ve asked me a year ago if Iwould listen to this based of the title I might’ve said no, but I’m so glad I gave it a shot.

I listen to so many podcasts that picking just 5 was tough. I tried giving a good mix of things I listen to. Feel free to share with me your favorite podcasts.

Xoxo,

Desiree

5 Fandom Friday: Things I Love About Fall

It’s been awhile since I’ve done a 5 Fandom Friday so I’m excited to join back in. As most people know Summer is my jam, so it’s hard for me to let go and embrace fall. However once I come to terms with it I do enjoy it.

1. Football

As far back as I can remember I loved football, more importantly the Dallas Cowboys. My love of it came from spending hours on Sundays watching it with my stepfather. As a kid I would try to mimick the hand gestures the referees made when making calls, as an adult I still do the same thing. My love for the Cowboys however is my own since my stepfather is not a fan. I couldn’t tell you what made me pick them as a kid since I had no clue about stats and so, but I’ve loved them since. If you follow me on Twitter you may have already seen some of my football tweets, if not be prepared because they’re coming.

2. New York Comic Con

I have been attending NYCC with my hubby and kids the past four years and we love it. This year however tickets were especially hard to get (if any of you here tried I’m sure you know the struggle was real). We still need one more ticket for my hubby and are hoping to get lucky.  We won’t be taking Squish yet because I just feel like he’s too small, but I can’t wait until we can. Most years one of my kids makes his own cosplay and this year is no different. If you’re attending and see me there feel free to say hi!

3. The Walking Dead

I’ve been a fan since the first episode and miss this show so much while it’s off. I mark my calendar and even set a countdown. As much as I love The Walking Dead I have yet to go to a panel and honestly I may never because the line and wait for it is insane.

4. The colors

A picture is worth a thousand words and I guess I really don’t have to get into it much. The turning of leaves is just beautiful.

5. Halloween

I love desssing up, the hayrides, carving pumpkins, and all the horror movies. Oh and the candy of course.

While nothing beats summer, fall comes close. What are some of your fall favorites?

5 Fandom Friday: Songs That Changed My Life

5-fandom-friday-338x250

Hello and welcome to another 5 Fandom Friday, super late edition. Once again I want to thank Megan from The Nerdie Girlie and Kristin from Super Space Chick for coming up with this awesome linkup. I’ve missed out on a few but just had to write up my piece for this past week’s theme, songs that changed my life. I’ve enjoyed reading everyone’s post and have found new music to add to my iPod.

1. Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata

This is one of the first songs that really hit me in the feels. I remember years ago when I was a young girl listening to it and thinking it was the most beautiful thing I have heard. I still feel the same way. It instilled in me a love for classical music and years later it would be a big influence of my love affair with playing the cello.

2. Foo Fighters: Everlong

Where do I start??? Foo Fighters are one of my all time favorite bands ever, ever, ever. And it all started when I first heard Everlong. Growing up I listened to mostly hip hop and RnB (besides my love for classical music), and it wasn’t until I got older and met people from outside my group that I was exposed to other types of music. I have to thank my friend Jen for introducing to the greatness which is Dave Grohl. One day I plan on getting something Everlong related tattooed on me.

3. Nas: The Message

As I mentioned growing up I was big into hip hop, it played a major part in my teenage years. Biggie, KrS-One, Redman, Tupac all took turns in my yellow Sony walkman or boombox. This was back when the only way to access new music was to buy mixtapes by people like DJ Clue, Who Kid, Kay Slay, and Green Lantern to name a few. However Nas just won me over from day one. The Message was one of the first songs of his I ever heard and it was love at first listen. The beat and his flow sealed it for me. **Warning this song contains explicit language.**

4. Aventura: Romeo y Julieta

Like most people my age the first Aventura song I heard was Obession, however it wasn’t until I heard Romeo y Julieta that I went ga ga for them and have been hooked ever since. The words pulled me in and that’s all she wrote. Not only did it make me a fan of Aventura, but of Bachata in general.

5. Eagles: Hotel California

I know I said Beethoven was my first love but if  I’m being honest it was probably the Eagles since I’m sure I’ve been hearing this song since I was born. After all Hotel California was released almost a decade before I was born, and as far back as I can remember my mom would jam out to it in the house. What’s not to love about this song, great lyrics, awesome guitar riff and it reminds me of home. Whenever i’m missing California this is one of my go to songs.

Extra:

Michael Jackson and Jay Z: You Rocked My World Remix

Can I just tell you first off like most 80s babies MJ was a huge part of my musical life (yes I am aware I’m dating myself here). When I heard about Michael and Jay Z performing together at Summer Jam I was in disbelief and so disappointed I did not witness this first hand. Luckily the single was released soon after.

Fleetwood Mac: Dreams

Oh Stevie Nicks how I love you so. Picking one Fleetwood Mac song was a tough one but Dreams I think was the right one. And you just know I was all for it when American Horror Story Coven included the fabulous Ms. Nicks in their series.

As always I have enjoyed writing up this post. While it was difficult narrowing it down to 5 songs once I really began thinking about it I knew exactly which ones I wanted to go with. Till next time.

5 Fandom Friday: Gateway Fandoms That Made Me Who I Am Today

5-fandom-friday-338x250

Hello, the lovely gals over at The Nerdy Girlie and Super Space Chick are hosting a link up every Friday called 5 Fandom Friday where they’ll have nerdy/geeky prompts for the upcoming couple of Fridays. I’m super excited to participate and read all the geeky things everyone’s into. Today’s 5 Fandom Friday: Gateway fandoms that made me who I am today.

1. Horror Movies

IMG_0030

I grew up in the era of Nightmare on Elm Street,  Friday the 13th and all other fabulous horror flicks. I remember waking up and sneaking off to the living room to watch Night of the Living Dead, only to be scared to go back to sleep. I couldn’t get enough, I was hooked!! My love for horror/zombie flicks is carries on till this day. I do prefer the older horror flicks to the ones that come out now, but I’m always down to go watch the new releases.

2. The Little Mermaid

images-1

I was about 8 years old when this movie came out and I have been hooked on it and mermaids since. I wanted to be a part of Ariel’s world so bad. I then saw Splash a few years later and I was convinced that I would turn into a mermaid like Daryl Hannah and be able to live underwater. Needless to say that never happened but I’m still convinced I’m part mermaid.

3. Harry Potter

images-2

What can I say I’m a Potterhead through and through. From the minute I read the first book it was love. I waited what seemed like forever in between releases of the books and movies. Going to the Wizarding World was a dream come true. I’m pretty sure I was more excited than my kids were to be there. My middle son is just as into it as me and we often geek out together about all things HP. We can’t wait to go back to The Wizarding World and enjoy the new attractions that have been added.

4. Oregon Trail

OregonTrailScreenshot

Let me tell y’all about one of the first computer games I ever played, Oregon Trail. This game was the shizz. Everyone would try to finish their work as fast as possible to be able to get on and play. The game was basically you trying to get this covered wagon through the Oregon Trail. Oh but it wasn’t a ride downtown now, oh no you had to deal with 19th century hardships. Snake bites, trying to hunt bear/deer to eat, floods, people dying the whole nine yards. This was some exciting stuff, who would make it to the end with the least casualties, will your wheel break today, were you going to be able to cross the river?? I played for months on end.

5. X-Men Animated Series

1344904383t-xmen pic

So back in my day we didn’t have Cartoon Network and 24 hour cartoon channels. Cartoons were aired for about 1 or 2 after school Monday through Friday and all Saturday morning. Man did I look forward to Saturday mornings. One of my favorite Saturday morning cartoons was the X-Men. They were the coolest thing out there, I had no idea that mutants could be this rad. It was like my novela, I looked forward to every new episode and could not be bothered while it was on.

This was a fun stroll down memory lane. I’m looking forward to next week’s link up.

What are some of your favorite fandoms?
