Potter Week

Hello cupcakes. Anyone who knows me knows I’m a big Harry Potter fan. I’ve read all the books and seen all the movies several times. I’ve shed tears of joy and sadness. And when we went to the Wizarding World a few years back I was in awe and could barely contain my excitement. Originally I meant for this post to go up yesterday for Harry and J.K.’ birthday (Happy Belated Birthday!!), but as you see that didn’t happen. However here I am ready to share two of my loves combined, Harry potter and Pops!

About 3 weeks ago Funko Pops released a line of Harry potter Pops and you know I had to go snatch them up. I’m still missing two of the currents that are out, Hermonie and Harry holding the sword. There are rumors of a Quidditch Harry being released this month and a Harry with the invisibility cloak in the future. I can’t wait for them all. In the meantime here’s a video I made with all the HP Pops I currently have. Enjoy!!

Potter week has me wanting to reread all the books. I may do so after I’m done with 2 books I’m working on now. If anyone is interested in reading along together let me know.

How did you celebrate Potter Week? What’s your favorite scene from the books/movies?

Thanks for stopping by. Please comment with any suggestions for upcoming videos you would like.

Oh hi

Hello dolls. I know I know I’ve gone and disappeared again. While I’ve tried to stay on top of blogging and reading blogs I have failed miserably. School takes up so much time. But I didn’t want to make a quick update of some of the current things going on in my life.

Watching: Daredevil, I’m sure most of the world is also watching this. It’s SO good. And while I would usually binge watch I’ve actually paced myself with this series. Also it’s just been renewed for another season so yay!!

I’ve also been watching Bloodline, which is a Netflix original series. I’ve only watched 3 episodes and I’m still not sure how I feel about it. I like it but there’s something that is just not letting me love it. We’ll see how that goes.

Reading: The Haunted, it’s a book based on one of Ed & Lorraine Warren’s cases. Ed and Lorraine are the demonologist who have investigated several hauntings including the Annabelle case which has been made into a movie.

I’m also reading The Devil in the White City, which is about a serial killer in Chicago. It revolves around a huge World’s Fair that is being built there.

Mood: Tired, so very tired. And a bit bummed due to some news I received to day, but I’m choosing to not focus on that.

Health: Well I’m living! I signed up today for a “Biggest Loser” challenge at work. Everyone who signs up pays $20 and at the end of 3 months the person who looses the most weight gets the pot. I figured even if I don’t win its a way to help motivate me. Now I need to find time to get back in the gym.

Listening: I listen to a lot of Slate podcasts, but also The Indoor Kids, The Nerdist, The Read, Stuff You Should Know, Bizzare States, and This American Life to name a few. Oh and Fake Goth Girls by Liz and Mia. They’ve made two episodes so far and they’re great.

Obsessed With: My hair, well wanting to dye it again. I just don’t know what. I’ve done red for so many years, and while I switched to this blondish brown two months back and I like it I would like something new. Skincare, I’m on the search for a new routine/products. What I’ve been doing no long works.

Thinking of: So many things!!! Awaiting the arrival of my niece in about a month. So excited for that. Wanting to get into vlogging and podcasting myself. Tips are welcomed.

Working on: Besides school stuff I have been working on launching a Geek Girls Brunch chapter here in Jersey. I found a lovely co-officer and we’ve been trying to recruit gals for our first event. Ideally we would like to be up and running by the end of summer. So if you’re a geek gal in NJ or know of one send her our way.

I’m also looking to have someone make me a logo. I may attempt to make one on my own bit doubt I’ll be able to sit and do so until after the semester is done.
So those are some of the things surrender occupying my time. Kids, work and school take up most of it, but I try to keep up and do other things when possible.

What are some of your currents? As always recommendations are always welcomed.

Xoxo,

Desiree

5 Fandom Friday: Songs That Changed My Life

5-fandom-friday-338x250

Hello and welcome to another 5 Fandom Friday, super late edition. Once again I want to thank Megan from The Nerdie Girlie and Kristin from Super Space Chick for coming up with this awesome linkup. I’ve missed out on a few but just had to write up my piece for this past week’s theme, songs that changed my life. I’ve enjoyed reading everyone’s post and have found new music to add to my iPod.

1. Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata

This is one of the first songs that really hit me in the feels. I remember years ago when I was a young girl listening to it and thinking it was the most beautiful thing I have heard. I still feel the same way. It instilled in me a love for classical music and years later it would be a big influence of my love affair with playing the cello.

2. Foo Fighters: Everlong

Where do I start??? Foo Fighters are one of my all time favorite bands ever, ever, ever. And it all started when I first heard Everlong. Growing up I listened to mostly hip hop and RnB (besides my love for classical music), and it wasn’t until I got older and met people from outside my group that I was exposed to other types of music. I have to thank my friend Jen for introducing to the greatness which is Dave Grohl. One day I plan on getting something Everlong related tattooed on me.

3. Nas: The Message

As I mentioned growing up I was big into hip hop, it played a major part in my teenage years. Biggie, KrS-One, Redman, Tupac all took turns in my yellow Sony walkman or boombox. This was back when the only way to access new music was to buy mixtapes by people like DJ Clue, Who Kid, Kay Slay, and Green Lantern to name a few. However Nas just won me over from day one. The Message was one of the first songs of his I ever heard and it was love at first listen. The beat and his flow sealed it for me. **Warning this song contains explicit language.**

4. Aventura: Romeo y Julieta

Like most people my age the first Aventura song I heard was Obession, however it wasn’t until I heard Romeo y Julieta that I went ga ga for them and have been hooked ever since. The words pulled me in and that’s all she wrote. Not only did it make me a fan of Aventura, but of Bachata in general.

5. Eagles: Hotel California

I know I said Beethoven was my first love but if  I’m being honest it was probably the Eagles since I’m sure I’ve been hearing this song since I was born. After all Hotel California was released almost a decade before I was born, and as far back as I can remember my mom would jam out to it in the house. What’s not to love about this song, great lyrics, awesome guitar riff and it reminds me of home. Whenever i’m missing California this is one of my go to songs.

Extra:

Michael Jackson and Jay Z: You Rocked My World Remix

Can I just tell you first off like most 80s babies MJ was a huge part of my musical life (yes I am aware I’m dating myself here). When I heard about Michael and Jay Z performing together at Summer Jam I was in disbelief and so disappointed I did not witness this first hand. Luckily the single was released soon after.

Fleetwood Mac: Dreams

Oh Stevie Nicks how I love you so. Picking one Fleetwood Mac song was a tough one but Dreams I think was the right one. And you just know I was all for it when American Horror Story Coven included the fabulous Ms. Nicks in their series.

As always I have enjoyed writing up this post. While it was difficult narrowing it down to 5 songs once I really began thinking about it I knew exactly which ones I wanted to go with. Till next time.

5 Fandom Friday: Characters I Would Like to Dress Up As for Halloween

Hello again and welcome to my late link up post for 5 Fandom Friday. This week ill share with you characters I would like to fess up as for Halloween. As always this was a fun prompt and had me thinking about so many ideas. It was hard to narrow it down but here it goes.

IMG_0186.JPG
Jean Grey: I have always loved Jean Grey since the first Saturday morning I saw her on TV while watching the Xmen animated series.

IMG_0185.JPG
Lulu Final Fantasy X: While I myself don’t play the Final Fantasy games my brother is a huge fan and I would watch him play. When I saw Lulu I thought she would be great to dress up as. Her outfit has such character and loads of detail.

IMG_0187.JPG
Bulma: Dragon Ball Z is another favorite series of mine. Dressing up as Bulma could be cute and fun.

IMG_0188.JPG
Tank Girl: I’ve always loved seeing people dress up as Tank Girl. She’s so outrageous and over the top. Another fun character to do.

IMG_0184.JPG
Gambit:I guess you can see a trend here. Doing a female version of Gambit is in my to do list.

With so many great characters to choose from it’s hard to make a choice. If only Halloween were everyday. What would you like to dress up as?

New York Comic Con (Part 1)

Hello lovelies. I’ve been a bit MIA due to spending the past weekend at New York Comic Con with the family. We had a great time but man were we exhausted after it was done. We didn’t get to get into The Walking Dead panel, but we did get to go to a few others which I’ll cover in my next NYCC post. Today I’ll just be posting pictures of some of the amazing Cosplayers we saw and a few items on the floor.

*If you see yourself in any of the pictures please contact me so I can credit you, thanks.*

Loved this group doing Toy Story. Great idea and they looked like they were having fun.

Loved her spin on Loki. One of my favorites.Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

Another fun group. They were so awesome and were even moving like the players in the game. IMG_0103This was from the Eastern Championship Cosplay competition. The contestants all did such an amazing job. I was blown away by the size and detail of this Rex and the fact that there’s a gal in there. She did an amazing job.

This gentleman won the overall competition. The wingspan on this dragon and the little details like the guy hanging off the back really put it over the top. Can’t wait to see what he does for C2E2.

We really enjoyed being able to attend the competition. You could just tell that everyone put a lot of hard work into their costumes. I’m sure the judges had a hard time picking winners, I know I for one wouldn’t have wanted to be the one to have to do so. Everyone who competed are winners in my eyes.

This is but a small fraction of what we saw. I’ve been inspired and am thinking of doing a cosplay of my own next year, perhaps something steampunk.

Do you cosplay? Would you like to?

5 Fandom Friday: Gateway Fandoms That Made Me Who I Am Today

5-fandom-friday-338x250

Hello, the lovely gals over at The Nerdy Girlie and Super Space Chick are hosting a link up every Friday called 5 Fandom Friday where they’ll have nerdy/geeky prompts for the upcoming couple of Fridays. I’m super excited to participate and read all the geeky things everyone’s into. Today’s 5 Fandom Friday: Gateway fandoms that made me who I am today.

1. Horror Movies

IMG_0030

I grew up in the era of Nightmare on Elm Street,  Friday the 13th and all other fabulous horror flicks. I remember waking up and sneaking off to the living room to watch Night of the Living Dead, only to be scared to go back to sleep. I couldn’t get enough, I was hooked!! My love for horror/zombie flicks is carries on till this day. I do prefer the older horror flicks to the ones that come out now, but I’m always down to go watch the new releases.

2. The Little Mermaid

images-1

I was about 8 years old when this movie came out and I have been hooked on it and mermaids since. I wanted to be a part of Ariel’s world so bad. I then saw Splash a few years later and I was convinced that I would turn into a mermaid like Daryl Hannah and be able to live underwater. Needless to say that never happened but I’m still convinced I’m part mermaid.

3. Harry Potter

images-2

What can I say I’m a Potterhead through and through. From the minute I read the first book it was love. I waited what seemed like forever in between releases of the books and movies. Going to the Wizarding World was a dream come true. I’m pretty sure I was more excited than my kids were to be there. My middle son is just as into it as me and we often geek out together about all things HP. We can’t wait to go back to The Wizarding World and enjoy the new attractions that have been added.

4. Oregon Trail

OregonTrailScreenshot

Let me tell y’all about one of the first computer games I ever played, Oregon Trail. This game was the shizz. Everyone would try to finish their work as fast as possible to be able to get on and play. The game was basically you trying to get this covered wagon through the Oregon Trail. Oh but it wasn’t a ride downtown now, oh no you had to deal with 19th century hardships. Snake bites, trying to hunt bear/deer to eat, floods, people dying the whole nine yards. This was some exciting stuff, who would make it to the end with the least casualties, will your wheel break today, were you going to be able to cross the river?? I played for months on end.

5. X-Men Animated Series

1344904383t-xmen pic

So back in my day we didn’t have Cartoon Network and 24 hour cartoon channels. Cartoons were aired for about 1 or 2 after school Monday through Friday and all Saturday morning. Man did I look forward to Saturday mornings. One of my favorite Saturday morning cartoons was the X-Men. They were the coolest thing out there, I had no idea that mutants could be this rad. It was like my novela, I looked forward to every new episode and could not be bothered while it was on.

This was a fun stroll down memory lane. I’m looking forward to next week’s link up.

What are some of your favorite fandoms?

Bits and Pieces

Hello lovelies. Last week I was taken out by the worst sinus infection. Actually almost all the camp here was suffering through something, allergies or asthma due to the change of weather. Needless to say between that and class I was very unproductive when it came to here which is why I just putting together some bits and pieces from last week for today’s post (this post is full of Squish pics, be warned).

Being sick and a mom doesn’t mean mommy duties stop. While the Mr did let me rest and took over when he was home, I still had to attend to the kiddos when he wasn’t.

IMG_0044.JPG
Squish was all about playtime, and even with a pounding headache how could I say no??

IMG_0045.JPG
The middle child and the Mr. worked on his Pipboy for New York Comic Con next week.

IMG_0047.JPG
The oldest turned 15 (man time flies!!) so we took him to Red Robin. I was pretty miserable there because of a sinus headache and it was so loud. Judging by this pic I think Squish thought it was too loud too.

IMG_0046.JPG
I tried enjoying my Banzai burger but again when you’re sick your tastebuds don’t function properly. Overall we had a good time and the oldest was pleased.

IMG_0042.JPG
Lastly I’m super excited for the return of The Walking Dead. Here’s a bit of my Funko collection, I’m still working on completing TWD minis and regular sized Pop! sets.

While being sick sucked it made me realize something, I need to schedule more posts and keep some drafts on hand. Had I had something thought out, or scheduled already I could’ve just published those instead of attempting to blog while sick and coming up with nothing. So that’s another thing I’m adding to my to do list.

What are some of your blogging tips or to dos?

Confessions of a Blogger

Today’s post is inspired by Megan’s link up on her blog The Nerdy Girlie. If you haven’t read her blog you’re missing out. Since she’s made her post on Friday other bloggers have made their confessions and I’ve really enjoying reading them. As I read some of them I can totally relate to some of the confessions being made by the other fabulous ladies. Without further adieu here are my confessions of a blogger.

Confessions.of.a.Blogger

1. I feel like I don’t fit in…….

Most of the blogs I follow tend to fall into categories: Beauty, Fashion, Food, etc., and here I am all over the place. I blog what’s interesting to me. One day I might post recipes or fitness content, another I may talk about my current fave beauty product or current show obsession, and other times I might just post about my life. I just can’t put myself in a box and focus on one thing. I’m not sure if this hurts me or not, but I don’t see it changing anytime soon.

I do feel like I have found a community with other “geeky/nerdy” girls, but even then I sometimes feel like I don’t completely fit in. I am late when it comes to discovering most shows, I love playing video games but I can’t buy every game I want nor do I have time to dedicate to it, I love cosplay but have yet to try one of my own (my family works as a team helping the middle child with his), so basically at times I don’t feel like I fit the “geek/nerd” mold either but it’s one of the one’s I can relate with the most.

2. I wish I were more consistent……..

But wait didn’t I just say I didn’t fit in and that’s okay? Yes I’m okay with not being consistent in being focused in one area, where I want to be consistent is in how many posts I put up a week. In my perfect world I would love to post 4-5 times a week or at least every other day. However at the moment I haven’t perfected my schedule yet, but I’m working on it.

3. I need to brush up on my skillz…..

I’ve been blogging on and off for about 7-8 years but I feel like I still have so much to learn. I don’t know much about HTML, my photography and photoshop skills need a lot of improvement, and I need to network more. Being a mom of 4 boys means I don’t have loads of extra cash so I don’t want to have to constantly pay for services, or things I can do myself. I don’t have a problem admitting my weak areas and asking for help, and I’ve been lucky enough to come across people who are willing to help or point me in the right direction. So bear with me as I improve my skillz.

4. Promoting myself, networking……..

I hate talking about myself, funny right? It’s not that I’m not confident in what I do or my abilities, I just have never liked talking about myself. I feel weird promoting my blog, I haven’t even told most of my friends or family that I have a blog. I know there’s nothing wrong with promoting yourself, how else will you make connections and get the word out there. I’ve been working on this and it’s feeling less icky.

So there you have it, my blogging confessions. What are some of your confessions?

The Sunshine Blogger Award

Hola, I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend. I know I looked forward to it all week and it’s just lovely. It was made even lovelier when the amazing Aimee Jaine nominated me for The Sunshine Blogger Award. Thank you Aimee, I delighted to be nominated.

Sunshine-Award

So what is the award? It’s an award given to fellow bloggers who inspire others, spread positivity, encouraging, or are creative and entertaining with their writing. But here are the official rules.

The Rules:

  • Thank the persona who nominated you.
  • Answer the question the person who nominated you asked.
  • Nominate a few other bloggers
  • Ask the same amount of questions for the bloggers you nominate.
  • Notify the bloggers you nominated on their blog.
  • Put the award button on your blog.

Why did you start a blog?
writing has always been a passion of mine. I’ve blogged on and off for years, however recently I decided I wanted to give it another go and really stick to it. I love to be able to get my thoughts out and connecting with others. It’s something I will continue to do as long as I can.
Tea or Coffee?
Tea is my top pick, but I can drink a good cup of Joe every now and then.
Cats or Dogs?
I’m a dog lover through and through. I have a Yorkie named Star, a Maltese named Dallas, and a Morkie named Bane. I would love a hairless cat though. Something about them intrigues me so much.
What is the meaning behind your blog name?
It’s a mash-up of some of the things that make me. I’m a geek, love video games, Comic Con, and geeky out over Harry Potter among other loves. I love all things glamorous, and fitness has become important for me.
Do you have any special skills?
My special skill is being a mother to 4 boys ranging from the ages of 15-6 months. I tell you no one really prepares you for motherhood, but I’m loving every minute of it. I’m also extremely good at coming in last on Call of Duty, one day I’ll be on top of the leader board, one day.
Lipstick or Mascara?
Mascara, never leave the house without applying mascara. It makes the biggest difference with my eyes. Even when I’m tired and wanting to climb back in bed a bit of mascara opens up my eyes a bit more.
Hair up or down?
Usually up in a bun I have to take down and redo a million times a day. The struggle of having long thick hair is real y’all.
Favourite annual holiday and why?
It has to be Thanksgiving. There’s family and friends at home, tons of amazing food, and football. How can you not love a day filled with pumpkin pie, good conversation, and the Cowboys.
Favourite quote?
What can’t you live without?
Oh wow this is a tough one. I want to say bacon but I know I would get use to that eventually. I’m going to say my phone. It has everything, pictures/videos of my family, ideas I have for upcoming posts, all my social media accounts, email, and texts. I think it would take some adjustment to be without it.
Favourite TV show?
Another tough one!! Well The Walking Dead of course. I’m also into Downton Abbey, The Strain, The Leftovers, Silicon Valley, and Hannibal right now. There are others but now these are the ones that occupy whatever free time I have.
My Nominees:

Kiersten

Karen

My questions to you.

What’s your favorite season?

One thing you wish you knew when you started blogging?

Any movies, TV series you’re looking forward to?

What’s your favorite book?

If you could wake up tomorrow with one new learned skill what would it be?

You’re given a 100K to do what you like, what do you use it for?

What’s the meaning behind your blog name?

What are your favorite topics to blog about?

What’s your most treasured possession?

Are you happy with your blog, what would you want to change?

Burritos or tacos?

This was fun, and again I’m delighted to have been nominated. I look forward to everyone’s post.
